There are barriers though, the first one is the cost. The second is time. Over the last year or so, since the explosion of foiling sports we have dabbled in windsurf foiling and wingfoiling. Both have steep learning curves. The sensation of being 2 ft above the water is wierd. Balancing on what they call the mast. Any sudden forward movement lands you head first in the drink and any backward movement tilts the foil upwards and drives the board out of the water and flips you on your back. Using a wing instead of a sail is another experience in itself. The novice will find it extremely exhausting. It takes a while to get poise and balance and when you finally do, for a split moment in time it is like floating down a fresh powder field on a snowboard. But then you snap out of state of Nirvana, realise all the variables, forget to put weight on your front foot and bang, face plant in the drink again.

We have tried a bit of Foil SUP also. They are all great and highly recommended. We look forward to getting more accomplished time and conditions permitting.

The purist in us though cannot beat the feeling of a rail in the water, the torque of fins as you carve up a wave face, or the concentration to navigate a high speed board through every bit of chop, crevice and whitecap. Foiling is great and here to stay, but for us, the closer to the water, the better.

What will 2020 and 2021 be remembered for?
